Since the introduction of Internet-based electronic commerce in the mid-1990s, e-commerce as it's now commonly called, we have seen continual refinements in the presentation and comparison of merchandise, the checkout process, and the overall customer experience. In little more than two decades, the promise and convenience of online commerce has been realized by the average consumer and has forever changed the competitive landscape in nearly every industry. While Amazon may grown to dominate the e-commerce mindshare for most consumers, many brick-and-mortar retail and catalog direct response giants that were slow to embrace the changes introduced by e-commerce have struggled to retain their customers.

It is often said that the Internet and e-commerce have leveled the playing field, enabling a small up-start to compete head-to-head on the merits of their product or service, but this is not completely accurate.
